Research Associate in the Department of Psychology and BCNI, Dr Jennifer Murray, recently took part in a Stemettes outreach day aimed at demonstrating to girls that females can go into the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and have amazing and fulfilling careers. According to a WISE survey, in 2012 women made up just 12% of the STEM workforce. Stemettes is one of a number of initiatives that is trying to address the gender imbalance in STEM.
Jennifer was part of a Stemettes panel of eight, which took science-related questions from the audience of schoolgirls and their parents. The day also included a networking session. The event, which took place in the lecture theatre at Microsoft Research in Cambridge, was a resounding success - and is sure to have inspired the attendees to consider a career in a STEM subject.
