The British Psychological Society has announced that Professor Claire Hughes is this year's winner of the Academic Monograph Award for her book Social understanding and social lives: from toddlerhood through to the transition to school (Psychology Press).
The Academic Monograph Award recognises "a significant scholarly work ... that has contributed to, defined or redefined an area of psychological knowledge."
Professor Hughes's book has been commended and praised widely. Professor Janet Wilde Astington of the University of Toronto's Institute of Child Study writes of it,
"This book is a unique tour de force. It skilfully integrates aspects of children’s own cognitive abilities with features of their social environment to explain the individual differences found in children’s theory of mind and the consequences of these differences for their social lives at home and school. It will be an invaluable resource for researchers and professionals in developmental psychology, child health, and education."
Claire Hughes is Professor of Developmental Psychology in the Department of Psychology and is a member of the Centre for Family Research. She has received research funding from the Economic and Social Research Council, the Isaac Newton Trust, the Westminster Foundation and the Early Years Foundation Trust.
