Department of Psychology

Each year the Department of Psychology holds an essay competition for Sixth Form students. This year over 100 essays were received from schools across the country, answering one of two questions:

“Is reason the master of emotions, or are emotions the master of reason?”

or

“What has research in the past decade taught us about the relationship between children's acquisition of language skills and their conceptual development?”

The following students have been short-listed for the three prizes:

Rosalind McAlpine -  Trinity School, Croydon.

Tayyba Amjad - Heckmondwike Grammar School, West Yorkshire.

Thehela Harris - Peter Symonds College, Winchester.

Daphne Jong - St Mary's School, Cambridge.

Tori Maddock - The Crypt School, Gloucester.

Jonathan Pitts - Ripon Grammar School, North Yorkshire.

Evi Rodrigues - Headington School, Oxford.

Nick Rowark - Wilmslow High School, Cheshire.

Paloma Shakouri - Bolton School Girls' Division, Lancashire.

Hannah Steiner - Brighton College, East Sussex.

Judges will reread the short-listed essays and soon announce the winners of the £300, £200 and £100 prizes for the three best essays. The overall winner will be invited to Newnham College with their teacher for lunch with Professor Claire Hughes, organiser of the competition.
