Professor Brian Moore has been awarded two grants to support his work on improving hearing aids. The first grant is from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and involves a collaboration with Dr. Richard Turner in the Department of Engineering. The title of the grant is "Machine learning for hearing aids: Intelligent processing and fitting". The work has two main aims: (1) To improve methods for reducing the effects of background noise on the ability to understand speech; (2) To use models of the impaired auditory system to develop improved methods for diagnosing the underlying cause of hearing loss and to use that information to improve the fitting of hearing aids to the individual.

The second grant is supported by a donation from the H.B. Allen Charitable Trust. The goal of this work  is to optimise the operation of the "automatic gain control" systems that are commonly used in hearing aids.
