A new publication from the Medical Schools Council, Health of the Nation: The Impact of UK Medical Schools' Research, shines a spotlight on the world-class research conducted by UK Medical Schools that is helping to make the United Kingdom a healthier and more prosperous country.  It provides examples of research case studies submitted to the Research Excellence Framework 2014 and presents them in four categories: 'Improving clinical practice'; 'Boosting the economy'; 'Delivering benefits to society'; and 'Beyond borders'.

The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, CANTAB, and the CANTAB PAL touchscreen test, developed by Head of Department, Professor Trevor Robbins, and Professor Barbara Sahakian of the Department of Psychiatry, are featured in the "boosting the economy" section of Health of the Nation. CANTAB tests cognitive function in older adults; it is used for the early detection of Alzheimer's disease. CANTAB and CANTAB PAL have been further developed by the spin-out company, Cambridge Cognition, which appeared in the Top 100 fastest growing private technology firms in the UK in 2012. CANTAB, which is used in healthcare settings, clinical trials, and research, has had a world-wide impact.
