The front-page feature in September's edition of The Psychologist is an article by Professor Claire Hughes on that momentous event in the lives of children, and one which many are experiencing at this time of year, the transition to school. Claire asks what matters, and why, during this crucial period of change. Claire's article, The transition to school, is available to read on The Psychologist website.

Claire has headed numerous studies in the field of developmental psychology, including the Toddlers Up project, which has followed a group of children from the age of two, and which observes family interactions and children's performance on tests of theory of mind and executive function.

Claire's applied work includes the development of tools for teachers to aid in the identification of children who would be most likely to benefit from additional support during the transition to school.

Claire's monograph, Social understanding and social lives: from toddlerhood through to the transition to school, won the 2014 British Psychological Society Book of the Year Award (Academic Monograph category).
