The Russell Lab has just published a landmark study in the journal Memory, showing evidence for episodic memory in two- and three-year old children. Click here for the paper. Uniquely, it took as a criterion for the memory being episodic that recall be all-of-a-piece (e.g., recall of Where would tend to result in recall of When and What too). It also strongly suggested that this form of recall is hippocampal. The other two authors were Dr Pat Burns (post-doc) and Dr Charlotte Russell (now at King’s London; works on parietal involvement on episodic recall; Professor Russell’s daughter).
