Department of Psychology

Senior Lecturer in the Department, Dr Dénes Szücs, recently made an appearance on the ITV programme, Tonight. The programme, subtitled Trouble with Numbers, focuses on the problem of poor numeracy in the UK, which is estimated to cost the national economy 20 billion pounds annually. Poor numeracy may also prevent large numbers of people from realising their full potential.

In the programme, Dénes talks about the phenomenon of maths anxiety. He points out that the most serious consequence of maths anxiety in children is that they reject mathematics.

The programme is available to watch until the end of November: https://www.itv.com/itvplayer/tonight/series-16/episode-35-trouble-with-numbers-tonight. (It is necessary to register or log in first.)

Dénes is a PI at the Centre for Neuroscience in Education (CNE), which aims to apply advances in understanding the brain to education. To find out more about Dénes's maths anxiety research, visit the Math Anxiety research page on the CNE website.
